Fleet Farm executive Stewart Mills is generating buzz as a possible GOP challenger to Democratic U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan in Minnesota’s 8th Congressional District.
Earlier this week, the Real Capitol View blog cited an anymous source familiar with Mills’ thinking who claimed he’s exploring a 2014 bid. Mike O’Rourke, the associate editor of the Brainerd Dispatch, tracked down Mills and was told the Real Capitol View post was “barking up the right tree.” A call from PIM to Mills’ Fleet Farm office in Brainerd wasn’t immediately returned.
Republicans in Minnesota and at the national level are targeting the seat that Nolan won in 2012 by defeating GOP Rep. Chip Cravaack. Cravaack served one term in Congress after upsetting veteran Rep. Jim Oberstar and ending the Democrat’s multiple generations of control over the sprawling northeastern Minnesota district.
Mills appears to be making the rounds among Republican groups. On April 30 he delivered a speech to the Minnesota College Republicans in which he criticized the government for infringing on 2nd Amendment rights and increasing taxes. He garnered media attention back in January when he issued a video message to Nolan and Minnesota U.S. Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken in which he opined that shotguns for duck hunting are more dangerous than an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle. Nolan had said he supported a ban on assault weapons in the wake of the December school shooting at Sandy Hook, Conn., in which 26 people were murdered.
Nolan needs to go again, just as he did in the 70’s. Just another leaning so far to the left his knuckles are continually bloody from dragging in the dirt. Loves inflicting the same pain on the rest of us “Centrists” with at least a dose of common sense.
IRT Sandy Hook, using it to target “assault rifles” when his was left in the car????? Another fine example of media hype and hysteria.
