Lee Byberg will get a second chance at knocking off 11-term DFL incumbent Rep. Collin Peterson in the 7th Congressional District. Byberg defeated state Sen. Gretchen Hoffman on the first ballot to secure the GOP endorsement at Saturday’s convention in Alexandria.
Two years ago Peterson defeated the Republican challenger by 17 percentage points despite a GOP electoral landslide that led to a pickup of 63 seats and a takeover of the House. The sprawling western Minnesota district tilts strongly Republican, but Peterson has run as a conservative Democrat and routinely run up double-digit victories.
Hoffman is serving her first term in the Senate representing west-central Minnesota. Redistricting placed her in the same district as two-term GOP incumbent Sen. Bill Ingebrigtsen. Both Hoffman and Byberg pledged prior to the convention to abide by the endorsement.
