Former St. Cloud DFL Rep. Larry Haws died on Tuesday evening after a battle with brain cancer.

Haws, who represented House District 15B from 2005 until 2010, was 72 years old.

In 2005, Haws received the DFL endorsement for a special election in the district after former DFL Rep. Joe Opatz resigned to take a job as president of Normandale College. Haws went on to easily win the special election after his opponent, Sue Ek, had her name removed from the ballot for improper residency.

Haws was re-elected by wide margins in 2006 and 2008. In May of 2010, Haws announced his retirement from the Legislature. He was diagnosed with brain cancer early last year and underwent surgery to remove a large tumor.

Haws had recently been placed in home hospice care, according to the St. Cloud Times.
