Two former DFL legislators from Eagan survived endorsement battles over the weekend, setting up two 2010 rematches in the southeast suburban swing district.

Former DFL Sen. Jim Carlson bested Eagan Mayor Mike Maguire after four ballots at the Senate District 51 convention on Saturday.  The race has split DFL activists in recent months, with former Carlson supporters hoping to see him reclaim his old seat, while other party officials have sided — albeit quietly — with Maguire’s campaign for the Senate.

“I can’t tell you how calm I felt on Sunday when I didn’t have to make any phone calls,” Carlson said Monday.  Maguire previously said he will not head to a DFL primary, and Carlson hopes he sticks to that. “I hope that he’s not going to a primary, because we are hoping to take this district. We need to be unified.”

Carlson will take on freshman Republican Sen. Ted Daley, who beat him by less than 5 percentage points in 2010.

Former DFL Rep. Sandra Masin also took home the DFL endorsement for House District 51A after a one-ballot challenge from Gary Meyer. Eagan City Council Member Gary Hansen intended to run for the seat, but redistricting placed him on the other side of the district. Masin will run against freshman GOP Rep. Diane Anderson, who beat her by less than 5 percentage points in 2010.

In House District 51B, DFL candidate Laurie Halverson was nominated to take on freshman GOP Rep. Doug Wardlow.
