Maple Grove attorney Dennis Smith has filed to run as a Republican in House District 32B, the seat currently held by Republican Speaker of the House Kurt Zellers.

Smith says he doesn’t plan to try and win the GOP endorsement over Zellers, however. He anticipates that the state’s new political maps, set to be finalized early next year, will place them in different districts ahead of the 2012 election.

With caucuses just a few weeks out, Smith said he wanted to form a committee and start raising money as he works to earn the GOP endorsement in the newly-drawn district.

“After looking over the redistricting maps adopted by the Legislature and recent decisions of the [Minnesota] courts, there is a strong possibility given the growth in our community a new house district will be created,”  Smith said in a statement.  “This election will be about maintaining fiscal restraint in St. Paul and working to further reform the way our government prioritizes its services and expenditures.  Minnesotans cannot afford a return to reckless spending and tax increases as we continue to work our way out of the current economic challenges.”

Smith, a graduate of North Dakota State University and the William Mitchell College of Law, runs his own law office out of Maple Grove.
