Current House Rep. Jeff Hayden and registered nurse Chris Eaton have earned DFL endorsements for two Senate special elections this fall.
The endorsements will likely be key in the Minneapolis and Brooklyn Center districts — both DFL strongholds — as candidates line up for an upcoming Sept. 13 primary. Hayden will face five other DFLers in the Minneapolis primary battle in September, while Eaton is up against one other DFLer in the primary and a Democrat-turned Independence Party candidate in the October general election for the district, which also includes part of Brooklyn Park.
In both districts, an executive DFL board opted to select a candidate to endorse instead of going through a vote of all of the district’s delegates. That is leaving some candidates, especially in Minneapolis, a bit sour. DFL candidate Elsa Batica says the local DFLers ran a “closed-door” process that was unfair to all the primary candidates except Hayden, who is a member of the district’s central committee.
Other DFLers in the Minneapolis primary: Sadik Warfa, Paulette Will, Kristian Heuer and Kyle Wilson. Timothy Davis will challenge Eaton in the DFL primary.
The seats opened up after longtime Minneapolis Sen. Linda Berglin retired for a job with Hennepin County, and Brooklyn Park Sen. Linda Scheid died of ovarian cancer this summer.
