State Sen. Dave Thompson is considering a run against U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar in 2012, Politico reports. The Lakeville Republican is a former radio talk show host and the only freshman senator to land a leadership post in the GOP caucus.
Thompson tells Politico that he’s been approached by Republicans about considering the race. “A few weeks of mulling this over and talking this over and seeing what kind of support appears to be out there. It would be my goal to have that decision by end of June,” Thompson said. “I couldn’t tell you if I’m feeling pro or con right now. Not leaning either way.”
No Republican candidate has emerged yet to challenge Klobuchar. Former state Rep. Dan Severson, who ran unsuccessfully for Secretary of State last year, is mulling a bid. Attorney Chris Barden, who ran unsuccessfully for Attorney General in 2010, is also considering a run.
