Rep. Tom Hackbarth is proposing an amendment to the state’s constitution that would explicitly guarantee the right to bear arms. The proposal would essentially mimic the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in ensuring gun rights.
The bill has been referred to the Committee on Public Safety and Crime Prevention Policy and Finance, which is chaired by Rep. Tony Cornish, R-Good Thunder.
Hackbarth notoriously was stopped by St. Paul police in November after he was spotted with a gun in the parking lot of a Planned Parenthood clinic. The Cedar Republican had a legal permit to carry the weapon and wasn’t charged with any crime. But Hackbarth did resign as incoming chair of the Environment, Energy and Natural Resources Committee after the incident.
