While the November election didn’t put former DFL House Majority Leader Tony Sertich with the Speaker’s gavel in his hands, it did land him a gig in DFL Gov. Mark Dayton‘s office.

Sertich will be the commissioner of the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB), Dayton announced Tuesday. The six-term Chisholm representative will now lead the organization in its goal of stimulating economic growth in northeastern Minnesota. He currently sits on the board.

“Both Gov. Dayton and I are dedicated to seeing the Iron Range continue to adapt and evolve economically as we move deeper into the twenty-first century,” Sertich said in a statement. “As a fourth generation Ranger, there is nothing more important to me than seeing my home region’s economy strengthened, and that it provide more opportunities now and for future generations.”

Sertich is the first sitting legislator to be named to a Dayton cabinet position. His House seat will be up for a special election on Feb. 15, as selected by Dayton, and he is subject to a confirmation from the Republican-controlled Senate.  Sertich will resign his House seat on Thursday.
