It looks like state GOP Rep. Randy Demmer‘s recent promotion to the National Republican Congressional Committee’s (NRCC) “Young Guns” program will start to pay off for his campaign. The NRCC plans to air more than $100,000 worth of attack ads against Democratic incumbent U.S. Rep. Tim Walz, who Demmer is vying to unseat in the First Congressional District.
According to Washington Post political blog The Fix and greater Minnesota DFL blogger Sally Joe Sorensen, The NRCC will start airing ads Friday attacking the two-term representative from southern Minnesota. The Fix’s Aaron Blake said the move is part of a larger play by national Republican groups to target the next rising stars in the Democratic Party and those who could lock down seats for years to come.
Walz’s campaign is looking to fight back, according to Sorensen, by raising an additional $100,000 to counter the negative spots.
From a letter sent out by Walz’s campaign:
“National Republicans are not coming after Tim Walz because they believe he is vulnerable, they are coming after Tim because he is strong. While Tim has focused on solutions that will improve people’s lives, the NRCC leaders have chosen to help Randy Demmer because they know he will be a reliable vote for Wall Street and health insurance companies”
