When the results of the latest Minnesota Public Radio/Humphrey Institute poll were released Wednesday, things didn’t look good for GOP nominee Tom Emmer.
The survey of 750 likely voters found Emmer trailing DFL candidate Mark Dayton by 11 percentage points and dipping below 30 percent. In a response to the numbers, Emmer campaign manager Cullen Sheehan sent a detailed memo to supporters dissecting the poll.
In the memo, Sheehan said a campaign pollster notes a “dramatic” 15-point shift in poll respondent’s party identification that they say could not occur within the 30 days since the last survey by MPR and the Humphrey Institute.
Sheehan also said “it’s not believable” that the poll finds Republicans have seen an increase in election interest, but the party’s percentage of the electorate has declined. Since the August poll, Republican interest in the election has increased 31 points (from 52 percent to 83 percent), while the party’s percentage of the likely voter sample fell 8 percent. Democratic interest increased 39 points and their percentage of the sample rose 7 percent, the memo states.
