Emmer honored by NFIB, says economic plan coming soon

Tom Emmer appeared this morning before the National Federation of Independent Business’ meeting at the Capitol to accept an award and take some questions from business owners about his plans for the state. Mike Hickey, the NFIB’s lobbyist in Minnesota, presented Emmer with the Guardian of Small Business honor in recognition of the Delano representative’s votes in the House.

Emmer’s brief speech and Q&A with the NFIB members focused on the concerns of small businesses: reductions in regulations and taxes. He also revisited a point he’s begun to use more frequently on the trail: “downplaying” the deficit, or refusing to take the deficit for granted. In response to a question, Emmer criticized the stated economic plans of his opponents, Tom Horner and Mark Dayton, and promised that a roadmap for an Emmer-led Minnesota economy would be soon forthcoming, as early as next week.

NFIB’s award to Emmer did not constitute an endorsement, Hickey said. But the organization does plan to endorse a candidate for governor soon, and judging by the warm reception at the Capitol, Emmer should be considered a foregone conclusion to pick up the group’s nod.
