Deputy Communications Director Bill Walsh has left Tom Emmer’s gubernatorial campaign and returned to his role as communications director for the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE).

Walsh said he is returning to his volunteer role with the campaign as the staff retools for the general election. Senate GOP Caucus Chief of Staff Cullen Sheehan recently joined the GOP nominee’s campaign as campaign manager, and former Republican Party of Minnesota Chair Chris Georgacas as chair of a board of senior advisors.

The Emmer team announced about a month and a half ago that Walsh was to take a four month leave of absence from MDE to head the campaign’s communication efforts. It’s unclear who will take over Walsh’s duties on the campaign.

Walsh has worked on several statewide GOP campaigns, including the elections of Gov. Tim Pawlenty and former Sen. Norm Coleman in 2002, and is a former executive director of the Republican Party of Minnesota.
