TakeAction Minnesota’s endorsement contest in Senate District 67 was expected to be tight with nine candidates vying for the group’s backing. But Vang Lor swamped the field on the first ballot, garnering 84 percent of the votes cast on Saturday.

“We were able to get a lot of the TakeAction members to come and support us,” Lor tells PIM. “You’ve got to get members out.”

Lor has been active with TakeAction’s Hmong Organizing Program. He chaired a successful effort, for instance, to incorporate Hmong history into the curriculum of St. Paul Public Schools. Lor’s campaign also encouraged supporters to join TakeAction Minnesota so that they would be eligible to vote in the endorsement contest.

“I think there’s a lot of energy with TakeAction Minnesota,” says Lor. “I’ve seen the power that they’re able to build and the turnout.”

Lor’s campaign team is meeting today with Ryan Greenwood, TakeAction’s political director, to discuss plans for the August 10 DFL primary.
