St. Paul Police Chief John Harrington filed today to run for the state Senate seat being vacated by Mee Moua. He is the fifth DFL candidate to officially join the race to represent St. Paul’s East Side.

Harrington has been with the police force for more than three decades, becoming the city’s top cop in 2004. He is slated to retire next month.

The other DFL candidates in the field: Tom Hilber, Vang Lor, Jim McGowan and Avi Viswanathan. At least five other individuals have stated that they are considering the contest.

There will be no DFL-endorsement in the Senate District 67 contest. The Democrats will square off in an August 10 primary. The winner will then face GOP-endorsed candidate Krysia Weidell.
