Drug Court Week begins today

Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Eric Magnuson has proclaimed this week Drug Court Week to recognize the folks who make Drug Courts work, and the significant contributions the courts make in reducing substance abuse and crime. It’s part of the “National Drug Court Month” campaign, coordinated by the National Association of Drug Court Professionals.

The first Minnesota Drug Court began in Hennepin County 14 years ago. There are currently 37 drug and mental health courts located throughout the state, but I understand that number has been dwindling as funding cuts continue to affect all aspects of the judicial system.

Monday’s print edition will contain an examination of the future of Drug Courts in Minnesota, particularly in light of the budget crunch. Stay tuned.
