Barrett wins GOP nod in District 17B

Charley Shaw//April 18, 2010

Bob Barrett defeated three local elected officials Saturday in state House District 17B to grab the Republican Party’s nod to run for the state House.

Last weekend, DFLers chose local party chairwoman Cindy Erickson to run for the seat being vacated by Rep. Jeremy Kalin, DFL-Lindstrom.

Barrett, who works for the Hazelden Foundation and lives in Shafer, edged out Wyoming Mayor Sheldon Anderson, Wyoming City Council member Russ Goudge and Chisago City Mayor Don Taylor. The candidates threw their support behind Barrett.

The north Twin Cities exurban district is a takeover target for Republicans. Kalin won election to a second term in 2008. But Republican Senate candidate Norm Coleman and presidential candidate John McCain dominated the top of the ticket.
