The Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party has abandoned a campaign finance arrangement involving a leading gubernatorial candidate after determining it was probably illegal.
House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher wanted donors to pay the party directly for her access to a pricey voter database because she was bumping up against certain contribution limits. Kelliher now must foot the bill out of her campaign account.
The reversal came after other DFL candidates complained that Kelliher was getting preferential treatment from the party amid an 11-candidate battle for the Democratic endorsement.
Party chairman Brian Melendez denied giving Kelliher a leg up. But he says party lawyers determined it may have violated campaign laws and decided to change course.
The dust-up was first reported by Minnesota Public Radio News and the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
