8th Circuit allows Vikings players to play

For all you football fans who haven’t heard yet, a decision issued by the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals today allows Minnesota Vikings Kevin and Pat Williams to continue playing this season.

The two star defensive tackles, who are not related, were suspended for four games last year for taking a banned substance  — without their knowledge, they say. The substance, bumetanide, is an unlisted ingredient in the over-the-counter supplement StarCaps. The Williamses have challenged their suspensions.

The 8th Circuit decision affirms a ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Paul Magnuson. Essentially it means that the Williamses can continuing playing while the case remains in Hennepin County District Court, where Judge Gary Larson has said he likely wouldn’t force the two into a civil trial during the coming season. The opinion is available here.
