If you have ever flipped on the TV to try to fall asleep in the wee, small hours of the night, then chances are you have seen her commercial.TV’s “tax lady” is ubiquitous for insomniacs and as one of them, I know that Roni Deutch promises to settle my IRS tax dispute for “pennies on the dollar.” She confidently tells viewers that she has experience dealing with the IRS and knows how to get results. To prove it, several satisfied customers tell their stories of owing the IRS thousands of dollars, and how Ms. Deutch was able to reduce that debt load.
With most late night infomercial, it often turns that the promise made in the ad is too good to be true. And Ms. Deutch is no exception. California AG, and candidate for governor, Jerry Brown sued Deutch this week for fraud and $34 million dollars. The suit alleges that Deutch mislead clients and overstated the number of residents she helped. She is also accused of running up client fees by false billing and engaging in “unfair competition while victimizing thousands of people in California and elsewhere.” (More here)
Deutch responded by saying that Brown is using her to score political points in the run-up to this fall’s vote and that she is innocent.
We will see who is right, but this I know for sure: If Deutch goes away, I will not miss the commercials.

I was one of Roni Deutch’s “Tax Directors” and I have read the complaint AG Brown filed. It is all true. I was trained (by Russel Deutch) to “Help” clients do the math so they would appear to qualify for an OIC. Made up expenses like child care paid to a “relative” or extra cords of wood in the winter to supplement energy costs, ask any former “Tax Director” and they will all tell the same story of scam after scam. I gave sworn testimony in the New York case; I sure hope I get the chance to testify against this dirt bag again.
