There's always been an apprenticeship model, it is just that this new label helps the firms pay less for new associates. This "new" model will hit the same problems with the old: a limited number of apprenticeship slots in a downward economy combined with rising tuition costs, growing class sizes, and new law schools opening. It's a recipe for disaster for those stuck with non-dischargeable student loans.

The real problem here is with law schools. They are getting PAID by their students to learn the practice of law. When a paralegal knows more about the practice of law than a new law grad, something is seriously hosed.
