'Super Lawyers' triumphs over New Jersey ethics panel
Dec 17th, 2008 by Mark Cohen
“Super Lawyers” throughout the state and the nation can breathe easy — the controversial New Jersey ethics opinion prohibiting the use of the designation in lawyer advertising has been vacated.
In its ruling today, the New Jersey Supreme Court expressed doubt whether the ethics panel’s opinion (known as Opinion 39) would survive constitutional scrutiny because of the limitations it places on commercial speech.
Bill White, publisher of locally-based Law and Politics, which originated the “Super Lawyer” concept, said he was “thrilled” with the ruling. For complete coverage, see next Monday’s print edition of Minnesota Lawyer.
