As President Barack Obama begins announcing his nominees for the nation’s 93 U.S. attorney spots, the National Law Journal reports, special scrutiny will be given to his picks and how they jibe with Obama’s promises of bipartisanship.
The leading candidate for the U.S. attorney slot in Minnesota, Robins Kaplan partner B. Todd Jones, was recommended by Sen. Amy Klobuchar. The NLJ article reported that Jones gave $4,350 in contributions to Obama’s campaign in 2007.
The firings of nine U.S. attorneys during the Bush administration left sore feelings among some Republican members of Congress, who have vowed to be a part of the vetting process when Obama’s nominees are introduced. Jones’ experience — he has served as U.S. attorney during the Clinton administration, following service as a first assistant and assistant U.S. attorney — would seem to indicate that he’s more than qualified. Will Jones’ previous support for Obama create an extra hurdle to his appointment?
