Kendall honored for innovative domestic violence court

The 36th Annual Law Day Testimonial Dinner recognized Stearns County Attorney Janelle Kendall for the Stearns County Domestic Violence Court Project and also bid a fond “see you later” to retiring Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid Executive Director Cathy Haukedahl.

Haukedahl has been the executive director of MMLA since February 2011 and served as deputy director for eight years before that. She will be succeeded by Drew Schaffer, who formerly worked in housing law at MMLA.

Kendall started the Stearns County Domestic Violence Court in 2008 featuring intensive offender supervision and enhanced collaboration among courts, criminal justice and community organizations. Of offenders who have completed the DVC since 2009, only 13 percent committed new assaults and there has not been one intimate partner homicide since the DVD’s inception. In 2014 the DVC was selected by the U.S. Department of Justice as a mentor court for other courts around the country.

The event raised over $470,000 for MMLA, Haukedahl said.
