The Social Security Administration will immediately begin fast-tracking paperwork for veterans who are rated 100 percent disabled by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The decision was announced yesterday. Social Security said it will treat these veterans’ applications as high priority and issue expedited decisions just as it does for disability claims filed by troops who become disabled for any reason while on active duty.
The decision does not, however, affect the backlog of disability claims at the VA. The announcement only applies to veterans applying for SSA benefits in addition to disability compensation from the VA.
In order to receive the expedited service, veterans must tell Social Security they have a VA disability compensation rating of 100 percent and show proof of their disability rating with their VA Notification Letter.
The VA rating only expedites Social Security disability claims processing and does not guarantee an approval for Social Security disability benefits. These veterans must still meet the strict eligibility requirements for a disability allowance.
