Benton County Attorney Philip Miller dug deep into his high school football days Thursday when he tackled a fleeing defendant at the courthouse.
Miller told the St. Cloud Times that he was at the sentencing of a man facing lengthy prison time when he noticed the man seemed “amped up.”
Miller had walked outside the courtroom to find another bailiff, just in case something went wrong, when he saw the defendant run out of the courtroom and down the hallway. The defendant ran right into Miller’s path.
“He was coming at me and I dropped down and took him out at the knees,” Miller told the St. Cloud Times.
The man was sentenced to 86 months in prison and could face additional charges of escape from custody and assault.
Other than some broken eyeglasses, Miller is fine.
