The Minnesota Client Security Board has approved payments totalling $46,088.33 for clients who lost money due to dishonest attorney conduct.
Five claims were paid in connection with the conduct of three Minnesota attorneys. Two of those attorneys – Deno W. Berndt and Barry V. Voss – have been disbarred. A third, Shana Gail Buchanan, was placed on “disability inactive status” by the Minnesota Supreme Court in 2013.
One claim was paid to a client of Berndt for $14,888.33. That brings the total dollar amount of claims paid because of Berndt’s conduct to $438,012.94. Two claims totalling $20,000 were paid to clients of Voss, bringing the total dollar amount of claims paid to clients of Voss to $37,400. Two claims against Buchanan were paid in the amount of $11,200.
The Client Security Fund is supported by Minnesota attorneys who pay into its coffers in order to reimburse clients who suffer financial loss due to attorney misconduct.
