In-house lawyer pay, by the numbers

A new survey from HBR Consulting has some good news for in-house lawyers: There is a good chance your pay went up in the past year. More than 6,000 lawyers at 260 global law departments responded to the survey that covered the period from March 2011 to March 2012.

The biggest pay increase went to general counsels. Their base salary went up 5 percent compared to a 3.4 percent salary increase for all lawyers. The average total cash compensation for general counsels was $1 million and $314,700 for all attorney levels.
