  1. Work/life balance is an ongoing process which requires intention. I believe that you can never achieve perfect balance as long as you are a practicing attorney, with all the daily demands involved. It is a constant journey toward balance. Valuing yourself as a person separate from your role/job as an attorney is a very good start.weat

  2. I definitely agree with your comment, and I appreciate you taking the time to read the post and write a response. I think the balance is struck at a different place for each person, and in that sense, I agree that we will never strike a perfect balance. I like to think of balance not as 50/50, but as a reflection of different needs–personal and professional–at different times. But like you suggested, I think the start (in part) to achieving that balance is to be able to separate the two in our own minds.

  3. Too many people throw this term around, but I really love what you’ve written here. Work-life balance haunts me everyday as I’m trying to set up my business as well as keep my family and friends happy. Nice of you to share your thoughts. Certainly inspired me a little bit…. :)

  4. Jeremy, I am thankful that this post was helpful to you. I am sure that setting up your business will offer a great opportunity to grow in this area! What a time consumer it must be. I wish you well in striking this balance for yourself.

  5. You have made some wonderful suggestions on how lawyers can try to maintain a healthier work-life balance. I would add one more suggestion to the list: hire a professional coach — particularly one who specializes in coaching lawyers. A difficulty with many of your suggestions is that it can be a real challenging when it comes to actually implementing them in practice, especially when you’re on your own and overwhelmed by it all. A professional coach can help you with this, and can also help you devise other strategies to bring about greater balance in your life. Professional coaching may be about all sorts of things, but at the heart of it all is establishing an overall balance that works for you. It is important to realize that we are not stronger by trying to go it alone. Any lawyer who takes the issue of work-life balance seriously would be well advised to consider hiring a lawyer coach. They are well worth the investment.
