Minnesota Lawyer associate editor Barbara Jones reports from today’s investiture ceremony of Chief Justice Lorie Gildea and Associate Justice David Stras that U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is among the dignitaries on hand at the Landmark Center in St. Paul.
Stras is a former clerk for Thomas, and Thomas was already signed up to co-teach a U of M class with Professor Stras when news came that Stras had gotten the appointment, Thus, the “surprise” visit from Thomas was probably foreseeable — although I must admit it wasn’t on my radar screen.
More details to follow. I suspect that Thomas will be allowed to address the crowd. Despite his proclivity to silence in oral arguments, Thomas actually has a good reputation as an engaging and sometimes jovial public speaker. He reportedly is very supportive of his ex-clerk getting this high court judgeship — a report given all the more credence by Thomas’ presence at the swearing-in event.
